Juicing vs. Blending - Article

It is alarmingly common to meet Raw Foodists with nutritional deficiencies. Tooth decay, hair loss, reduced life span, and other unfortunate consequences have been experienced by many of us with this supposedly "ideal" lifestyle.

In my opinion, a 100% Raw Food Diet without getting assimilable nutrients by either juicing or blending vegetables, is a deficient diet.

What I am about to share with you is something I consider to be very important and I want it said just right, so I will give a direct passage from "Fresh Vegetable and Fruit Juices" by Dr. Norman Walker:

An entirely Raw Food regimen, without the inclusion of a sufficient quantity and variety of fresh-Raw juices is equally deficient (as a cooked food diet). The reason for this deficiency lies in the fact that a surprisingly large percentage of the atoms making up the nourishment in the Raw Foods is utilized as fuel for energy by the digestive organs in their processes of digesting and assimilating the food, which usually requires as long as 3, 4, or 5 hours after every meal. Such atoms, while furnishing some nourishment to the body, are mostly used up as fuel, leaving only the smaller percentage available for the regeneration of the cells and tissues.

However, when we drink Raw vegetable juices, the situation is entirely different, as these are digested and assimilated within 10 to 15 minutes after we drink them and they are used almost entirely in the nourishment and regeneration of the cells and tissues, glands and organs of the body. In this case the result is obvious, as the entire process of digestion and assimilation is completed with a maximum degree of speed and efficiency, and with a minimum of effort on the part of the digestive system.

I can give you example after example of people running into marginal deficiencies on a Raw Food Diet. You can get away deficiency-free by consuming blended vegetables... yet... In my opinion, juicing a wide variety of vegetables is the optimal way to supply the vitamins and minerals we need. Our bodies love veggie juice! Juice means pure liquid: all the fiber has been removed. This liquid flows straight into our small intestines and there is no fiber to slow down absorbtion. Juicing is the best, most natural way to get vitamins and minerals in their most absorbable form ~ liquid, liquid, LIQUID! Look at the picture to the right!!! It is just colored water! Those colors represent vitamins and minerals... in their MOST ABSORBABLE FORM. Look at this intuitively. Try to drink a minimum of two 16oz vegetable juices every day. This picture makes me want to drink this straight NOURISHMENT right up.

All of the Raw Food healing centers use vegetable JUICING or wheatgrass JUICE in order to help people heal from degenerative diseases because it is the most efficient way to nourish the body.

I know that over the past couple of years the blending movement has gained great popularity. Many people have switched over from juicing to blending for various reasons. I KNOW that it gets FUSTRATING when there are two different views on what to do, which can become very confusing. Many people choose to do one of each a day - ie. one juice and one smoothie - which is a GREAT idea. Please, choose for yourself what to intake as your daily absorbable nutrient drinks each day, as both will work. Due to the immense benefits of Juicing and the masses of 'GOOD' that juices have provided to thousands of people, I am going to throw as much weight as I can on to the 'Juicing' side of the "Juicing vs. Blending Balance Beam."

I asked David Wolfe, "Why do you think Dr. Norman Walker lived to be so old?" David gave me ONLY one answer and said, "I think it was because he drank all those vegetable juices."

Drinking vegetable juices is SO POWERFUL that it can give you the vitality to create a cleansing reaction within the body, on a cellular level. People don't feel well from these endogenous poisons being thrown out of the cells and they want to stop vegetable juicing. This is one of the reasons why vegetable juicing and cleansing the colon go hand in hand. In my opinion, if someone isn't succeeding on a BALANCED Raw Food Diet, while drinking vegetable juices everyday, generally, it is the lack of cleansing the colon that is the cause of these issues. A person in this situation might swap those vegetable juices for green smoothies instead and find that they seem to feel better. This may result in them thinking that the smoothies are better for them overall than the vegetable juices. However, in my opinion, it is essential to understand what is truly happening here. They may indeed feel better initially after switching to blending, as it will lessen the cleansing/detox reaction, but the detox will almost certainly catch up with them again later if they don't cleanse the colon on a periodic basis. When someone switches from primarily juice to primarily blending, the detox reaction is simply slowed down to a degree as smoothies provide less overall nourishment.

Another reason why people choose blending over juicing is because it is SOOOO EASY to make. You just throw everything in a blender and VOILA! Then to clean up, you just have to rinse the blender. The entire process takes five minutes. This can be a GREAT thing! Additionally, smoothies usually have masses of fruit in them to make them taste really good to the tongue. The pioneers taught us that the Vegetables are the "Nourishers" of the body and the Fruits are the "Cleansers". Ideally, we want the nourishing aspects of food in their most absorbable form to rebuild and regenerate the body.

I often here questions like, "What about the fiber??? I heard that there are nutrients in the fiber that we need?" The other solid meals that we eat throughout the day contains all the fiber we need. The long-term goal would be to chew this solid food thoroughly, to get all the nutrients inside of it. I currently don't Fletcherize my food everyday yet after 8 years of being 100% Raw and daily vegetable juicing, my blood test still shows ZERO deficiencies. In fact, far from wanting fiber in my drinks, I strain all my juices with a Nut Milk Bag JUST TO MAKE SURE I get all the pulp out for the most optimal absorption possible!

Compared to solid foods, blended food digests easier, as it is already broken down. Additionally, blending bursts the cell walls of fruits and vegetables, making more nutrients available to the body than our teeth could release because of insufficient chewing. You can definitely succeed in the long-run with green smoothies. In my opinion, juiced foods are exponentially easier to assimilate though, because all fiber and solids are removed. Juice is simply and perfectly - liquid. Unlike a blended salad (smoothie), with juicing, every bit of nourishment can be used to regenerate, rather than digest.

Be diligent to chew blended foods. It can be tempting to quickly swallow blended meals because there is nothing solid to break down with our teeth. However, if there is any amount of fiber present in your meal, chewing is necessary to prepare the stomach for digestion. Neglecting this step can cause imperfect or partial absorption, not to mention gas and bloating. If you are going to blend, I recommend "chewing" each mouthful until it is thoroughly salivated and trickles down the esophagus on its own without you consciously swallowing.

Norman Walker is in complete agreement with this concept. He writes:

A blender is not practical for the extraction of juices. Its action merely cuts up the vegetables as fine as desired, but the pulp is still present in its entirety.

Furthermore, to drink juices from which the pulp has not been extracted taxes the digestive organs more than eating and properly masticating the Raw vegetables and fruits themselves, as proper insalivation and thorough mastication is essential to the complete digestion of vegetables when the cellulose fiber is present. This is not usually done if the fibers still remain a part of the mush or liquefied vegetables; whereas, the juices from which the fiber has been removed furnish, without interference, every particle of the nourishment contained in the vegetable for immediate and quick assimilation by the body.

The key is to get absorbable nutrients, whether that is via Juicing or Blending, to succeed in the long-run on the 100% Raw Food Diet, in this day and age.

I am giving a lot advice in this particular post and the information contained in this message is for education only and is not meant to diagnose, prescribe, or treat illness. It is valuable to seek the advice of an alternative health care professional before making any changes.

When mainstream people who are unaware of the 100% Raw Food Diet comes to me to seek healing, I generally recommend they do an intermediate diet. I had an old friend from college - Rosalie - who had a severe case of PCOS (Poly-Cystic Ovary Syndrome). She had 2 miscarriages; one single birth and then more recently she lost twins. As she was in the midst of this condition she gained about 83 lbs as a side effect. She desperately wanted a successful pregnancy. The doctor said that the next step would be to have surgery, as there were other options and that there was a great risk that she could not get pregnant in the future. She discovered a picture of me on MySpace while taking a trip down memory lane. She had never heard of Raw Foodism before. She began doing tireless research and every way she turned, I kept appearing. She knew it was a sign.

I told her to go on Fred's Intermediate diet (which is in my book Raw Spirit), while explaining that if she truly wants to heal, she is advised to ONLY eat the foods on that plan and NEVER deviate. I also recommended that she cleanse her colon a few times during her first month of doing this, plus also drink a couple of vegetable juices every day. When people come to me, it isn't very often that they follow all my suggestions verbatim and that alone sometimes makes the difference in healing completely or not. Lastly, I made sure she took masses of Dr. Fred Bisci's Therapeutic Enzymes, many times a day on an empty stomach. I KNEW that would be the icing on the cake. I was talking to her daily for a week or so and then I didn't hear from her for months. I totally thought she fell off the wagon, which commonly happens. HOWEVER, three months later, Rosalie Wrote:

I have great news!!! I had an ultrasound today to check on my PCOS and it is almost all gone!!!!!!! Before I began on my journey I had so many cysts that my ovaries looked like a galaxy of stars. Today the Doctor counted only ten on my left ovary and eleven on my right. I was so excited I could not believe what a difference changing my eating lifestyle would bring me. I tell my husband and anyone else that will listen that I feel alive again and most importantly I feel like a beautiful woman again. I will never be able to express to you in words how grateful I am to have you back in my life as a mentor and friend. Please share the news with others that there is hope and also with your mom and let her know again I appreciated her kind words a few months back. Next stop, a healthy pregnancy. I'll keep you posted

Rosalie is now pregnant again and HEALTHY. Yes, the diet played a HUGE role. The addition of the enzymes and colon hydrotherapy also sped this process up probably 20-fold. Those little powdered enzyme catalysts, when taken on an empty stomach go to work in the metabolic processes of the body. They speed up chemical reactions and create other beneficial chemical reactions in the body that would not have happened without their presence. They are MIRACULOUS! It's so funny to me that everyone is considering me a purest. I never really thought of myself like that but, hey, I guess I am, from some perspectives. The reason I don't eat typical "raw food condiments", such as nama shoyu and spices is because they mess me up and give me a runny nose. I would if I comfortably could. I would even eat Raw Goats' cheese/milk in moderate quantities, if I comfortably could. A few years back I tried a little raw cheese and I got lots of mucus. It's only because of how 'clean' I am now, at a cellular level.

It's funny, I go to some people's houses and they are absolutely DILIGENT about not having ANY household chemicals in the house. However, they eat refined sugars and processed starches. They are literally internally ingesting very harmful substances. Although it could still be a bit of concern, I'd rather see someone take care of what they put INSIDE themselves than the outside factors. As crazy as this may sound, I like to use those Chemical DOVE Soap bars and put it ALL over my body. I love how it just SUDS up everywhere! It's one of my remaining 'vices' ;)

OK... Now to the question. I'll throw the entire apple in a blender when I make food; the core, seeds, skin, and stem. I don't care! It doesn't bother me! ;)

Yes, I believe that eating/drinking some kind of 'broken-down', assimilable nutrients daily is a necessity to succeed on the 100% Raw Food Diet in the long-run. I just got an email the other day from a woman asking me to take her off my email list because the Raw Food Diet did damage to her health and she didn't want anything to do with it. She said it's just not for everyone. Additionally, she wrote:

I'm following eastern philosophies (Chinese and Ayurveda) and eating only warming foods as I tend to be a very cold person. I guess the cooling nature of raw foods helped to put me out of balance. In that was, I see that it is not for everyone.

My readers, if you do this correctly, !!ANYONE!!, can flourish eating a 100% Raw Food Diet. Many people are unaware of the key details for success, or just don't want to do the extra necessary things to succeed with this type of lifestyle; THOSE could certainly be the reasons why it may seem this is not for everyone. As I stated in this blog HERE, the rules change when you become raw, and the body types/blood types/aryuveda types etc lose their potency. Now don't get me wrong, I think it is TOTALLY ok not to be 100% Raw and that you can still be extremely healthy that way. In fact, with over 50% of the people I consult with, I suggest that being 100% raw is not for them, for varying reasons.

Ok... Now to the question... I feel the optimal amount of vegetable juice for us to consume is two 16oz vegetable juices a day. All vegetables have different compositions of nutrients, so it is important to get a wide variety of them all (even beets and carrots). Greens have chlorophyll, which is the most beautifying element of food that a human can consume. Therefore, it would be in our best interest to make at least half of the juices we drink each day from greens. I personally don't usually mix fruit (the cleansers) with my vegetable juices. I love using carrots (veggies are the nourishers) to sweeten the juice because they are much more rich than fruit in vital elements needed by the body. I personally try to do two 16oz glasses of vegetable juices daily. Sometimes I will drink more than 16oz, if I make extra juice. I generally make about half the juice greens. Sometimes, I'll do a vegetable juice that is excellent for the liver and gall bladder that only has carrot/beet/cucumber in it. They all have different nutrients, just juice them all...

    We now have the Colosan in. This was the product recommended in the popular blog post about my mom entitled, "Intermediate Success". I posted this section of the blog post below. Of course, Colosan is best taken in conjunction with colon hydrotherapy, yet it is also GREAT on its own for people who REFUSE to do colon hydrotherapy. Colosan works mainly inside the small intestine, which we can't get to with colon hydrotherapy. The action of the oxygen helps balance fermentation & yeasts. The quick liquifying effects of old impacted matter often create energy shifts & reduction in bloating. If people do the initial suggested 5-day intensive use of Colosan, it frequently encourages them to keep going. Colosan is great too for travelling & jetlag.     So... After about 8 months, my mom had a healing crisis and at this time my mom refused to cleanse her colon. She went to the hospital and they put her on antibiotics which took the cold away. Luckily, within a couple of weeks, her cold came back. She was very weak, as all her vitality was just trying to push this waste out of her. Before she went to the hospital a second time, she had a HUGE bowel release! For two days she poured out nonstop. (Now I am in REALLY BIG TROUBLE!!!!) When she came out the other end of this, she lost the desire for her coffee and stopped that too.

    Dr. Fred Bisci told her that her life would be soooooo much easier if she just did a colonic. She wouldn't have to be going through as much pain. He also told her that he has recommended thousands to get colon hydrotherapy and never has anyone run into problems doing it. It is completely safe. I feel at some point she will do it.     Shining the Spot Light - Dr. Fred Bisci

    Dr. Fred Bisci is almost 80 years old and he has been on a 100% Raw Food Diet for 50 years now. I was trying to keep up with him on the beach on a fast 3 mile trot and we were looking at people his age with walkers and canes. A few years back we went on a hike together and I couldn't keep up with the man. I know people 20 years younger than him who have a rough time just walking around the block.

    I often dream about what it would be like to meet those Raw Pioneers who have passed on, for whom I have great admiration.
